Benefits of yoga and meditation on our mind

I have always been a chubby girl and gaining weight is like a cake walk for me lol. in my pregnancy too, I gained a whooping weight of 20 kgs and I was sure to reduce it after my delivery.

50 days post delivery I started yoga with a very trained and well experienced yoga guru. She helped me gain all the energy and positiveness through her training. In the beginning our aim was to gain strength, calm my self and get fit than loosing weight. Weight loss happened as a bonus. Her training included yoga asanas and meditation.

I gained immense strength both mental and physical through yoga – which  was much needed with an infant.

Yoga and meditation are the two forms of ancient Indian tradition, which emphasizes on a holistic approach to achieve proper coordination between the mind, body and soul to achieve the good values of life and lead a life full of exuberance and vitality.

Yoga and meditation has been associated with each other from the beginning. Both work together to achieve the goal of ultimate unity of the mind-body and soul, which is also referred to as a condition of everlasting happiness. Meditation and Yoga, teaches us ways to detach from the surrounding, both physically and otherwise, which ultimately results in a balance of emotional makeup. When this happens an ultimate calmness sets in, it develops a positive perspective and approach that grants amazing benefits to our body in both physical and mental ways.

Yoga and Meditation- its connection with our Mental Health

Yoga and meditation are phsycology – the practicing of which helps us understand and work with the nature of the mind, the nature of being a human, how emotions and thoughts shelter in our mind, and how they affect the our behaviour.

When we all talk about yoga, we talk about its many physiological benefits like increase in
flexibility and decrease in stiffness of muscles and much more. Very rarely do we ever mention about its many mental, psychological, and cognitive benefits. There has been many studies and researches done to assess the effectiveness of yoga and meditation for brain and mental health—-and the results has come back promising.

Here are some of the most prominent benefits of practicing yoga on our mind:

 Boosts memory and improves concentration

We all have gone through phases of lack of concentration and focus on our day to day tasks. Dharana, a yogic form is practiced for concentration, and is a perfect way to clear mind and control and calm our senses. Meditation teaches us to remove all sorts of static noises from our mind and focus. This helps you to remember things, concentrate better, and perform to
the optimum.

 It helps with anxiety and depression

Involving activities like relaxation, meditation, exercising and socializing, yoga has always
been helpful in reducing depression and anxiety. It has all been possible with yoga by
regulating human stress response mechanism. With capabilities of reducing blood pressures and heart rate and thereby improving respiration, yoga provides the means to deal with anxiety and depression without the aid of nay medication.

 Helps improves your psychological/mental well-being

We often have feelings of carrying excess burdens on our shoulder, feeling highly stressed and tensed. With yogic practice you can definitely throw away those unhealthy feelings. Yoga forms involves concentration on breath and body, that aids soothing of mind and relieve worries. With discharge of stress, tension and psychological burdens one is free of any negative elements and finds optimum psychological health.

 It helps reduce the effects of traumatic experiences

Many among us go through some certain tragic episodes in life like, physical abuses, severe medical conditions or military combats that goes on to develop conditions of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the ones who suffer from this mental illness frequently experiences nightmares and flashbacks, to name a few of the symptoms. A form of yoga, known as the Hatha Yoga, shown to be effective in reducing PTSD symptoms. Yoga and meditation has shown considerable improvements in people against the ravages of traumaticexperiences.

A Yogic Diet Based on Ayurvedic Principles for Mental Health

A yogic diet practice in applying Ayurvedic principles to keep our body nourished and our mind clear. Most vegetables,  fruits, legumes, and whole grains are considered sattvic, meaning good for mind and body and in contrast foods like onions, meat, and garlic and rajasic foods like coffee, hot peppers, and salt are considered to increase dullness or hyperactivity, and hence to be avoided.

Here are a few principle on which yogic diets are based on:

  •  A yogic diet should be Sattvic (an all vegan diet believed to calm and purify the mind,
enabling it to function at its maximum potential)
  •  Should be vegan.
  •  Should be free of chemicals and stimulants.
  •  Should contain fresh foods.
  •  Should be at regular intervals, two hours before asana practice or sleep.
  •  Should take out time to practice ashanas and time to fast.

After Knowing this immense benefits that yoga has on our mind and soul, I am sure to start practising it again. what do you think about it?

Do you feel stressed, worried and physically ill? Then Yoga and mediation is for you.

If you are vitamin deficient and require nutritional supplements, you may take proper measures. I would always support finding good and right food to clear out all deficiencies. Food is medicine.

6 things to keep in mind to get fit

Being a chubby girl since childhood, I am in constant struggle of being fit. Read about my fitness journey here. These are some ways that worked for me.

1. Have an aim:

You must find an aim to get fit and lose that extra weight. You need to find why you want to get into the new you. It could be anything from fitting into that dress to being fit enough to play with your baby, wedding in the family, become thin to match your hubby or just to be fit and ditch that thyroid, pcos etc. My aim to lose weight is to match up with my dear hubby as he is on the leaner side.

2. Break your aim in to short term goals:

Breaking your aim into short term goals helps you achieve results. It gives motivation when you achieve your results. Your goal can be reaching some weight in so and so months, some occasion in the family and so on. My last goal was to reach 70 kgs till march end as I had a wedding in the family in April. And believe me I reached it only because I had that goal in mind. My next goal was to reach 65 till July end. I didn’t reach 65 but reached 66.

3. Mindful clean eating:

I have already shared I had been to a dietician to lose my extra weight before my wedding. They do super work but over the years I have learnt that it’s not dieting its diet that’s important so having a balanced diet and making some life style change is the key. We need to work on what you eat. Increase natural food, increase your protein intake, reduce processed food, eat everything in small portions, drink lots of water. Now everyone says the same but this is what it is. Don’t follow for 3 months follow for life.

4. Have a buddy:

The best partner can be your spouse. But if he/she keeps busy ask a friend. If that too doesn’t work have an online buddy. Now I have online buddies we have a what’s app group where we post our pictures post workout and share our meal plans. This will keep you accountable and you will go for it just bcoz you must post it there.

5. Measure yourself every fortnight:

Numbers cannot be the only target. At times, you may not lose any weight but loose on inches. This happens when you eat good protein rich food and lose your fats. This will keep you updated. Body measurements will help you know which area you need to work and weight will keep motivate you to work more.

6. Exercise:

The most important thing is exercising. Exercise keeps your metabolism high. Try and at least do 30 minutes of exercise every day or at least 4-5 times a week. If you have a very busy schedule then you may take stairs, walk wherever possible, workout on weekends. Any kind of workout is helpful so don’t think just two days is not gonna help.

Please note I am not a fitness expert. I am sharing this with my personal experience.

My fitness Journey – As a mom and otherwise

Most moms worry about getting fit and losing weight postpartum. I share my story of fitness here to help you girls.

2003 – 2007 : I have always been a chubby girl. I was always called moti (fat) by my friends in my school days. once I joined college, I knew I must do something but since I am a foodie dieting wasn’t my cup of tea plus I never even thought of it. inspite of this, I still got thin. Now you may imagine How? How? How?

I come from a middle-class family where we were taught to value each penny. My parents never gave me extra money except pocket money. During college days one wants to join friends for movies and a lot of bowling and stuff. I never got money for all such stuff. Whatever little pocket money I got was for me to travel from home to college and classes plus to eat throughout the day.

How do I hang out with my friends when bunking was so much fun? So, what I did was didn’t eat any food or just ate one samosa from a shop which was a friend and my favourite. I ate only when I couldn’t manage my hunger. Thanks to starving I lost a lot of weight.  My tummy was flat but I lost all the glow and looked pathetic. I was still happy because I never looked so thin. Thanks to college, classes and lack of money I maintained this weight for good 3 years. I worked on my glow and looked good in the third year which was my first year of degree college.

2008 : I had grown up. There was a lot of guy looking around, crushes and all such madness. This brought me to my guy for life my husband. There was a lot of outings and eating out, pampering and chocolates and stuff.  Despite gyming I put on all the lost weight. I finished my college and went for a professional teacher course B.Ed I gained maximum at this year. Thanks to long lectures and over stuffing of food. In all this time, I was fighting to lose weight but never lost any.

2009 : I was teaching in a renowned school and everyone at home wanted me to get married but I didn’t want to, only coz I looked fat. I’m sure many of you might have felt so. And so, I had to tell my mum wait for some months. I went to this dietician called Tripti Gupta. And damn she helped me lose all the extra weight and I was all fit, lean before my wedding day. I owe it to her. My in laws never saw me fat and never believed I was fat.

2010 – 2015: After marriage most couples gain weight, but thankfully both of us maintained and remained lean. Damn! over the years I gained weight. At 4 years of my marriage I was back again to my motapa (fatness). By the way major weight gain was thanks to a colleague friend who was supposed to get married. She made me eat all the samosas saying I’m going, when will u eat with me again and stuff. Let me again tell you I was in constant struggle of losing weight over these years too and sometimes I lost sometimes I gained.

Then I had to conceive so I lost all the interest as my major focus was conception. Now after delivery I am back again to my fitness obsession.

2016 – 2017: On my delivery bed, I was 86. When my baby was 9 month old I was 70. I had lost around 16 kgs of weight, which was quite good in 7 months.  Postpartum I knew I had to get back to the lean me. I started working on it when my baby was 50 days old. Clean eating was happening even before post that I started yoga to gain strength. I continued yoga till my baby was 6 months and now I follow my youtube gurus.

Now after a year post delivery, I am back to my pre-pregnancy weight which is 66 kgs but yes I still have a lot to loose. Not to forget my target is not only weight, I am writing down weights here because thats something measurable and can be seen but I have gained a lot of strength. My body is tighter to the body before pregnancy thanks to exercising,
